Kunga Yoga – Service, Community, and Practice
Kunga Yoga is a service-based approach to yoga rooted in compassion, community engagement, and mindful action. The word “Kunga” comes from the Kinyarwanda (Rwanda) language and means “to serve” or “to help”. Kunga Yoga teachers are encouraged to integrate service into their teaching, their practice, and their community life.
Service Commitment
Five percent (5%) of the proceeds from Kunga Yoga classes is donated to charitable organizations supported by the Kunga community. This tradition reflects the heart of Kunga Yoga: using practice as a way to uplift underserved populations and to bring more kindness and awareness into the world.
This donation is made by the studio and does not create any additional cost for students beyond the regular class fee.
Kunga Inspiration of the Month
Kunga Yoga teachers share monthly themes of inspiration: such as gratitude, non-violence, or global awareness to help students connect their practice with mindful living. These themes support personal reflection and strengthen the sense of community within Kunga classes.
Teaching Approach
Kunga Yoga classes are taught using the principles and models introduced in the Kunga Yoga Teacher Training. Teachers are encouraged to bring their own strengths, creativity, and personality into the practice while honoring the foundations of the Kunga tradition.
Community Engagement
Kunga Yoga emphasizes education about the service projects it supports. Teachers are encouraged to stay informed about these initiatives and to share this knowledge with their students, helping to build awareness and inspire collective action.
